Manchester United's veteran Dutch shot stopper Edwin Van der Sar set to retire
Edwin Van der Sar, who has been Manchester United's shot stopper for most of this decade, has decided to finally call it quits by the end of this season, according to the team’s goal keeping coach, Eric Steele.
The keeper who has formerly been the Dutch national side’s number one and who is currently set to turn forty by the end of this month has not been keeping his desire to retire soon a secret. Steele also went on to confirm
that the keeper was all set to finally leave Old Trafford as a first team player, but he still intends to earn the FA Cup winners medal before he does leave, since that is the one trophy he has not lifted with United.
Steele was reported to have said, "I think Ed has made his mind up and said this is his last year, He is a good pro and a sensible and highly intelligent guy who will know when the time is right. I don't think he will need
myself or the manager to tell him that time has come. He will know.”
"But if he gets to Christmas and he thinks it is right to go on and the manager thinks it is right we will make a decision. It is down to how he feels and performs. If he doesn't perform the manager will make the decision.
Edwin will as well."
Steele then went on to further add that the keeper, despite having won the Carling Cup, the Premier League and the Champions League with United, wants to really try and get his hands on the FA Cup, in hopes of having a perfect
trophy collection by the time he retires.
Van Der Sar has easily been one of the best keepers that United have produced in ages. They are however going to be in desperate need to find a keeper who is as capable as the Dutch man to take over at the club once he does
decide to walk away from it all. With the manager and the scouts in a desperate rush to try and find a keeper, the Red Devils are more than likely to find a decent heir to Van der Sar’s throne.
