Manchester United’s victory against Liverpool- Reactions (Sir Alex Ferguson, Berbatov)
Manchester United kick started their season with a big 3-2 win against their old rivals, Liverpool. Earlier, United seemed to have made a habit of losing leads as was evident from their last three Premier League matches.
Man United were 2-1 against Fulham but they ended the match at 2-2. Next week, they were comfortably ahead against Everton by 3-1 but eventually ended up with a 3-3, conceding 2 goals in the stoppage time. Once again, it was starting to look like the same
old story. Berbatov had scored twice and United had a two goal cushion, but a late tackle in the box by Evans led to a penalty and later Fletcher sided away from the wall in a free kick and the match became 2-2.
Liverpool Captain, Steven Gerrard, got both the goals and then on Liverpool seemed to have got the momentum as they started threatening the United goal for a winner. The Bulgarian, however, came to the rescue once again and headed in a spectacular winner.
Later, Berbatov said that his team tends to make things difficult for themselves but if they just stick to the basics and concentrate only on what’s important, then there shouldn’t be any problems.
It was the first time a Hat Trick had been scored in a Man Utd vs. Liverpool match since 1964. Berbatov added: "Let us hope in the future we won't complicate it so much. We have to keep working and improving on that. There is a long way ahead of us but hopefully
in the end, we will be on the top."
Meanwhile, after the match, there was this talk of the match referee’s decisions to be more in favor of the home side. With the score at 2-1, John O’Shea tackled Fernando Torres just outside the box and he looked to be the last man. According to the rule
book, he should have been handed a red card but the World Cup Final referee, Howard Webb, decided to go with a yellow.
Manchester United’s Manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, commented on his team’s victory saying that the score line was fair and his team deserved the win. Although, Berba had headed in the winning goal, but the goal that is sure to be talked about for a long time
was the 2nd goal. The Stylish Bulgarian controlled a cross from Nani on his knee and used an overhead kick to send the ball in the back of the net.
"I never saw the ball go in the back of the net. But, when I heard the crowd scream, it was easy to guess what had happened. It was a good goal but as long as the ball hits the back of the net it doesn't matter", said the Bulgarian.
The front man was given a standing ovation from the Old Trafford crowd for the very first time. The man called a genius by Ferguson had, earlier, never been the one to hog the headlines. After the match, he said he is not planning a big party or celebration
and instead heading straight to home. "It was probably my best day in a United shirt. Obviously, I am happy but I am nothing special. I am going home to play with my kids", said Berbatov.
With Wayne Rooney still not able to hit his stride this season, it was a great welcome sign for United that the 31 million pound signing is finally coming of age. Berbatov had long been criticized by the fans and media for being lethargic and non-motivated
but Ferguson had always maintained that he is a different player altogether and will come good in his own time.
