In the twelfth minute of the game against their Portuguese opponents, City were forced to make a switch as Kompany didn’t seem capable of continuing any more. The loss of their star defender seemed to have a negative impact on the Manchester based club, as they went on to lose the game by one goal to nil, following a goal in the second half from Sporting.
When talking about the extent of the injury to Kompany, Mancini is quoted to have said: "We have to wait one or two days to know the exact extent of his injury, but it is a problem with his calf.”
"I hope to have Kompany back in 10 days or two weeks, but we have other solutions."
The manager then turned his attention to the result of the game that took place, as the manager insisted that anything could happen in football and despite his side being the better team on the night and having created more chances, they still lost the game.
The Italian manager then went on to add: "This result was not a surprise, anything can happen in football. I do not think we deserved to lose. We did not play well, we had chances to score, but we didn’t.”
"We have bigger chances to go through. It will be a different game in Manchester. When we have chances to score, we will score.”
"We played slow sometimes because we found 10 players behind the ball. We had more chances to score than Sporting.”
City are now going to have to hold strong over the remainder of the season, or the team could be in for a very disappointing climax to their season.
