Mandy Minella strains past Sesil Karatantcheva in the 1st qualifying round - Sony Ericsson Open 2012
Luxembourg representative, Mandy Minella, outclassed the Kazakh competitor, Sesil Karatantcheva, to march into the second qualifying round of the Sony Ericsson Open on Tuesday. It was an easy straight sets triumph for the 26-years-old
beautiful blonde, ending with the scores of 6-4, 6-3.
It was the third straight head-to-head win for Minella who has been reigning supreme over the Kazakh in all their encounters to date; winning in straight sets. Three back-to-back wins this year must have infuriated the 22-years-old
Kazakh who would be hungry for her revenge in the next clash.
The match was all about breakpoints. The first set featured as many as seven breakpoints and six of them were played consecutively from third to the eighth game. Luckily for the 91st ranked Minella, she won four breakthroughs
compared to three of her opponent and bagged the first set with ease. The Kazakh contestant could only hang on to her serve for once throughout the set that led to her downfall.
Trailing one set down, the 133rd ranked Kazakh started the second set in a dismal fashion; losing the opening serve game and donating an early breakpoint to her opponent that blurred her chances of a comeback. The lead
was consolidated to 2-0 with a serve hold that exerted immense pressure on the Kazakh.
Another breakpoint for the Luxembourg citizen in the third game almost diminished the chances of a comeback from the Kazakh. The trade of breakthroughs in the following two games raised the lead to of Minella to 4-1. She was cruising
along and serve holds at both ends enhanced the scores to 5-2.
Karatantcheva broke serve in the eighth game much to the delight of the crowd and kept her chances alive but was broken back in the following game that cleared the air for Minella.
The Luxembourg representative, Mandy Minella, will takes on the local starlet, Jamie Hampton, in the next round of the tournament. Hampton trashed the Argentine teenager, Paula Ormaechea, in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to progress into
the second qualifying round of the tournament. Next round match will be entertaining to say the least.
