Question:

Mane Training Advice...?

My horse has a crazy mane and I tried braiding his mane over for a long period of time, but it went back to it's original form. Any suggestions? I also used a training spray from the same company that makes QuikSilver and it wasn't very effective. Thanks in advance.

  1. Is there a reason you need to have it all on one side? If you show hunters it only needs to be on the right side when it is braided. For regular pleasure riding, no one cares where your horses mane lays. For western pleasure showing or other western showing you can show while it is rubberbanded to the right side. http://equisearch.com/library/graphics/b...

  2. Put Mane and Tail leave-in conditioner on the mane and then braid it in about one inch strands. Make sure the braids aren't too tight, since that would make the hair fall out. Every day when you groom your horse, use a wet brush on the crest of the mane to make all the little hairs lie down.

You will probably have to re-braid at least once a week.

At a show, unbraid the mane at least one day before you show so there arent' any kinks in the hair. When getting ready, use the wet brush to lay the hair down, then put a line of hair gel on a comb and comb it through, paying special attention to the crest. Then spray the crest with hairspray and lay a towel over the mane. This has worked for every crazy mane I have ever dealt with.

Sometimes a horse will have a very thick mane, and you can clip underneath the mane to make it lay down better. Only do this if the main is extremely thick, though.

  3. I would say alto of it depends on your horse's age. You maybe trying to change something that has been growing like this for 20 years.

How often do you pull or comb his mane. Two of our horses have VERY thick and heavy manes. When they come to be groomed for the first proper time after the winter they are huge, long, tangled and thick. I use WD40 to get the tangles out, then I use human leave in conditioner. While it is wet with that give it a good combing. That'll get alot of that mane out, and once you can get the combe through without a hitch I would give it a good pull. Once it is pulled and tangle free you have done about as much as you can do for a mane.

I have never had to retrain mane growth, but from what I have read it isn't commonly very succesfull.

    Good luck!

  4. i would do what Danielle said that is what i did

  5. what you need to do is use show sheen and that will get all the knots out and it will also condition it. Then after you use that braid it and make sure its tight so none of the mane comes out of the braid.

  6. I have an appy who has an extremly short mane that can never be trained to stay to one side. What i have done is braid all of the his mane into little tiny braids and keep them in for a week. When i take it out his mane is tamed to one side. remember that it only stays like this for a week or two.

  7. Cowboy Magic!!! It's the best! it gets all tangles out on contact! I use it all the time!!!

  8. My mare has a CRAZZZZY mane too. It drives me insane so I finally decided to tame it. First give him a normal bath and brushed out his mane and tail. Take a wet towel and drape it over his neck. Leave it there for ten minutes. Then take it off for two so it doesn't get too heavy on his neck. Do this a couple times then that night put a slinky on him. make sure the mane is how you want it before you put the slinky on. Keep the slinky on for a while.... Then wa-la!

Hope it works on your horse too! :)

  9. Sometimes its best to leave it because it is the horses breed. What breed is he? Certain breeds in shows are supposed to have their mane and tail left unbraided because it is kind of wavy. Otherwise I'm sure there are shampoos you can get, or just thin it with scissors to make it easier to control.
