Manger Profile Football: Carlo Ancelotti
Carlo Ancelotti started his career with football way back in 1976, with Parma. He spent only three years at the club, where he played brilliantly and was then eventually lured in by Roma. He went on to captain the side and led his team to lifting the Italian Serie A title in the 1983 season. He also managed to help lead Roma to lifting the Italian cup on four separate occasions. He soon after made a move to AC Milan in the 1987 season. He played his last few games as a Milan player and departed in some style after winning the “scudetto” with the team.
His first job as a coach came in 1995, for a Serie B team called A.C. Reggiana. Although he only spent a year with the club he got them promoted to the Serie A, after which he took the management job at Parma. After proving his worth, the bigger Italian clubs came around looking for the manager. In 1999, he signed for the Italian giants Juventus, where he succeeded Marcello Lippi.
He failed to win a single trophy with the Old Lady, but he had some of the best credentials one could ask for. He was soon signed by AC Milan in 2001. In his first season in-charge he took the sinking ship of Milan and got them to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in the 2001-2002 season.
He was highly criticized for his defensive style of play, which he later corrected by converting Pirlo into one of the greatest playmakers the world had ever seen. He also reignited a deadly combination of Inzaghi Na Shevchenko upfront. In the 2003 season, he helped Milan beat Juventus in the final of the Champions League on penalties. He also won the Coppa Italia the same season for good measure. His master class was shown when he signed the fairly unknown Brazilian Kaka that season.
In the 2003-2004 season Milan won the first league title since the 1999 season. But in the following seasons, which were from 2004-2006 Milan finished as runners up behind Juventus. Carlo with his master tactics and his record signing went on to win the Champions League in the 2007 season.
Ancelotti announced that he had resigned from Milan on mutual consent on May 31st 1989, after his contract was terminated with a year remaining on it. Ancelotti was snapped up by Chelsea who had gone through five managers over the span of twenty-one months.
Ancelotti made an immediate impact with them, by winning the Community shield against Manchester United. He ended the season by winning the Premier League and the FA Cup in his first season as a boss at Chelsea.
Ancelotti said in an interview that someday he would like to return to Italy and manage Roma and is the only Italian club he would consider taking over. He also said that he would also like to manage the Italian national team. But Chelsea fans don’t need to worry about those statements, since after the FA Cup win he is reported to have said he would like to stay as manager for the Blues for at least another ten years or so.
Ancelotti has become one of the fans and the players’ favourite coaches at the club, even though he has only spent one season at the club. He lost his opening game of the 2010-2011 season to Manchester United but since then helped the team bounce back. Chelsea have already recorded two six nil victories in their opening two games and have managed to break ahead of the pact and gain a two-point advantage in just the second league of the season. If Ancelotti and the team keep this form up, it would be highly doubtful not to see the team take home another title of being English Champions.
