Mangold returns to Jets practice
The New York Jets received some good news. As it turns out centre Nick Mangold is not concussed and returned to the Jets practice. Mangold took a big hit in practice last week and pulled himself out of the preseason game against the Giants as he wasn’t feeling well.
Mangold did not dress for the game. He didn’t think he had suffered a concussion after he took a hit from Sione Poucha last week, but he did miss practice for two days. As part of the NFL’s new strict head injury protocol, Mangold underwent several tests and was fine. Mangold had described his feeling as “foggy” something which he claims he has never felt in his career.
"I don't have the medical definition or anything," Mangold said. "In five years of being in the NFL I've had my share of bumps, bruises and everything in between. This time it just didn't feel right. I was fortunate we took it seriously and had the chance to sit down for it."
Mangold said that he expects to practice in full pads soon and should be available for Saturday’s preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.
"He had a little bit of a headache and I said aw, forget it," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "I played doctor on that."
Mangold, like Darrelle Revis, is seeking a new contract from the Jets, but unlike Revis he is in camp and is sure to play this season, barring a big injury. Staying healthy is very important for Mangold this season if he wants his value to remain high when the time comes to be given a new contract. Revis is not willing to take that risk and has not shown up to training camp. He likely won’t even play this season. Mangold is one of the best centres in the league and may have dodged a bullet by not suffering a concussion.
