Manhattan Beach set to stage thrilling action of Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Tour
The South side of Manhattan Beach Pier is set to host the Main-Draw stage of the Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Tour on Sunday, August 28. Four courts have been designed to host the matches, where both men and women teams will play. A total of 10 games
will be played and USA Volleyball and IMG are the organising authorities. The day will be opened with the consolation and quarter-final matches in both men’s and women’s sections. Successful teams will advance to the next stage of the semi-finals and then
eventually tot he finals.
The female top seeded pair of Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and Jenny Kropp (Hawthorne, Calif.) staged a great performance in the tournament and qualified for the semi-finals. Likewise, the pairing of third-ranked Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and
Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) did the same and settled for semi-finals.
In the men’s division, top team of John Hyden (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) and Sean Scott (Redondo Beach, Calif.) managed to get hold of the semi-final spot despite a 5th-round scare from Ty Loomis (Corona del Mar, Calif.) and Mark Williams (Australia). In the
fifth round, Loomis/ Williams took them to three sets in the 18-21, 21-13, 18-16 in one hour, nine minutes. However, they couldn’t stop Hyden/ Scott to go for the next round. Meanwhile, 7th-ranked Brad Keenan (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Billy Allen (Venice, Calif.)
also worked their way to the semi-finals.
Keenan seemed overly delighted about the semi-final qualification. He started season playing on the FIVB World Tour with Casey Patterson in 2011 and earned great spotlight at the Manhattan Beach. The tandem of Keenan and Allen were challenged by third-seeded
John Mayer (Culver City, Calif.) and Matt Prosser (Long Beach, Calif.) in the fifth-round, where they grabbed success by posting 21-17, 19-21, 15-11 in 58 minutes. Keenan disclosed his thoughts about the match. He said: “We had to serve tough and blocking
was important at the end of the third set,” Keenan said of the victory.
On the other hand, Mayer and Prosser dropped to the consolation bracket. They are now scheduled to play second-seeded Kevin Wong (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Jesse Rambis (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) in the consolation match on Sunday. In the other consolation quarterfinal,
9th-seeded Ed Ratledge (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Ryan Mariano (Lake Forest, Calif.) will cross their ways with Loomis and Williams.
8th-seeded Megan Wallin (Siesta Key, Fla.) and Chara Harris (Sarasota, Fla.) will put up against 2nd-ranked Brooke Sweat (Estero, Fla.) and Kristen Batt (Venice, Fla.) in the women’s consolation quarter-final. The winners of the quarter-finals will face
Kropp and Pavlik.
The other quarterfinal in women’s category will feature seventh-ranked Christal Engle (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Jennifer Snyder (Huntington Beach, Calif.) on one side of the court. The fifth-seeded Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Tracy Jones
(Huntington Beach, Calif.) will approach the opposite side. The winners will Day and Hughes.
