Manly Sea Eagles receive a boost with Cliff Lyons’ inclusion in the coaching squad
Manly Sea Eagles have confirmed on December 20 another uptake in their coaching side, Cliff Lyons, who will oversee coaching responsibilities along with his former teammate, Geoff Toovey.
The Sea Eagles recently were subjected to a series of transformations, where the news regarding the departure of premiership-winning coach Des Hasler to the Canterbury Bulldogs, tops the popularity ladder.
Officially, Lyon will reign in as coach in 2012 for the New South Wales (NSW) Cup, but he seems eager to take up the position. That was apparent from the fact that the player attended Manly’s Wednesday morning training session to get himself acquainted to
his new role.
Previously, Lyon was coaching the Narraweena Hawks where he enjoyed tremendous success and this is a major leap in his coaching career. Lyons has acknowledged that he is looking forward to working alongside the Manly head coach Toovey.
While expressing his delight over getting a chance to work with his former team mate once again, Lyon said, “It’s great to catch up with Geoff again, he captained Manly for many a year and I played outside him so it’ll be great to get that combination back.
I was fortunate enough to win the last two premierships with Narraweena in the A-Grade – so that was great, and I’m just looking to step it up a bit.”
Meanwhile, Troovey was also equally delighted to catch up with this long time teammate. Expressing his views about it, he said, “We’re really happy to have Cliff on board. I’ve known Cliff since I came into grade in 1988. He has done a wonderful job coaching
in the junior league and I look forward to his continued development of emerging players for the Sea Eagles.”
While discussing his future game plans that will be exercised during his term with Sea Eagles, Troovey added that their basic strategy would be to focus on the basics. He explained what simple things will be and shared that they will focus on completing
the sets, using up all the tackles and ruling out errors.
He also mentioned that if these basic checks are catered to then nobody can stop them from confirm their team’s inclusion in the first grade level rugby league.
