Manny Machado shines as Baltimore Orioles rout Kansas City Royals 5-3 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles showed some great pressure handling abilities as they edged the Kansas City Royals 5-3 at Oriole Park at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Sunday, August 12 in the finale of their four match series.
Third baseman Manny Machado provided Baltimore with an excellent start as he connected for a two run home-run to right-centre in the second inning to put his side on the board.
"That's crazy. That's the first time I heard it," Machado said. "To be mentioned with Frank Robinson, one of the greatest third basemen, that's just great. It's a great feeling. I'm just fortunate."
The Royals were also determined to put up a solid show. Mike Moustakas hit a home-run to right in the fourth to bring Royals back into the contest.
Brayan Pena also hit a sacrifice fly to left and Moustakas earned another RBI single in the fifth to help Kansas City come back from behind for a 3-2 lead.
"I'd put myself in his shoes, I'm sure he's having a blast. But he doesn't want to do anything to upset the apple cart toward the other team. He's been very respectful of the competition, and that's something that we've tried to do all year," Manager Showalter
said of Machado.
However, the Orioles were not prepared to go down without a fight. Nick Markakis displayed some top quality hitting skills, adding a solo home-run to right-centre in the fifth. Mark Reynolds secured an RBI single and Nate McLouth scored on a passed ball
in the eighth as the O’s split the four game series.
Starting pitcher Tommy Hunter played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash as he gave up just three runs in five solid innings. Relief pitcher Jim Johnson tossed up the perfect ninth for his 34th save of the season.
Despite their win on Sunday evening, Buck Showalter and company fell to third place on the American League East Division standings. Considering the fierce competition at the top of league standings table, the Orioles will be looking to bring more consistency
in their game-play.
