Manny Pacquiao checks into hospital following weekend bout
It wasn’t just Antonio Margarito who landed in the hospital after a vicious 12-round war with Manny Pacquiao this weekend.
“Pacman” has also undergone a series of examinations in a Los Angeles hospital,
The Examiner reports, after suffering pain on his right side, cuts on his face, and swollen hands.
The newly crowned WBC junior middleweight champion drove to the hospital with wife Jinkee after cancelling engagements Monday, which included a late-night talk show and a book signing in the evening.
Following the fight Pacquiao experienced pain on his right side in particular, sore wrists, swollen knuckles, cuts and various swells on his face.
After seeing Dr. Gina Bagsik it was recommended he undergo x-rays and take an MRI. Professionals did not find any bones fractures or organ ruptures.
Opponent Margarito was also admitted to a hospital in Dallas immediately following their Saturday bout. He received six stitches on his lower cheek and three above his eye. It was also reported that
he suffered a right orbital bone fracture, for which he is expected to undergo surgery Tuesday and Wednesday.
The fight, which went the full 12 rounds, has received its share of criticism for not being stopped before the final bell. In the 11th and 12th rounds Pacquiao appeared to motion to the referee, Laurence
Cole, to examine Margarito’s cuts, but the referee let the contest continue.
With the win Pacquiao takes his eighth world title in as many divisions, a feat hitherto unaccomplished in professional boxing. Most agree that with the win Pacquiao completely dwarves Floyd Mayweather
Jr. as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, and many are already inclined to allow the 31 year old admission to ‘greatest ever’ lists.
Pacquiao admitted he was seriously injured in the sixth round due to a body shot and said he was lucky to recover and avoid further punishment.
