Manny Pacquiao defeats Juan Manuel Marquez in a controversial majority decision – Boxing news
The highly anticipated trilogy bout between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez last Saturday on November 12, 2011 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada saw yet another controversial ending to it after the Filipino star, who is an eight-division
world champion and the current World Boxing Organisation, won a 12-round majority decision over the Mexican Dinamita to retain his title.
Pacquiao and Marquez 1 ended up in a controversial draw in 2004 and in their second meeting, in 2008, Pacquiao was awarded a split decision. Therefore, Pacquiao-Marquez 3 was a much-awaited fight because people wanted to see who the real winner among them
is. However, they have been left indecisive after Pacquiao was awarded verdicts of 114-114, 115-113 and 116-112.
The 32-year-old Pacquiao, who now carries a record of winning 54 of his 59 professional fights (2 Draws), with 38 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, entered the ring as a red-hot favourite but Marquez surprised him and everyone in the arena by
controlling the pace and being very aggressive.
Both fighters fought toe-to-toe and all rounds were very close but it was Marquez who impressed everyone by outworking the champion and fighting smart. The Mexican at times jumped in with quick combinations and stepped away before Pacquiao could counterpunch.
Pacquiao on the other hand just managed enough to get past his opponent by the end.
The 38-year-old Marquez, who now holds a record of winning 53 of his 60 professional fights (1 Draw), with 39 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, after the bout claimed he was once again robbed.
Many boxing analysts on the same note stated that it was a lacklustre performance from the Fighting Pride of Philippines and he is no longer at the top of his game.
Moreover, they now consider that Pacquiao’s welterweight rival Floyd Mayweather, who is a five-division world champion and the current World Boxing Council World Welterweight Champion, is the best fighter in the world.
The Mayweather camp recently hinted they are finally looking to set up a super-fight with Pacquiao in 2012.
However, after another controversial ending, there is also a possibility that Pacquiao may fight Marquez for the fourth time.
