Manny Pacquiao will retire by 35 to be a public servant
While boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao has indicated he isn’t finished with boxing yet, there can be no doubts a political life is rapidly becoming his lifelong passion.
GMAnews.tv quotes Pacquiao: “I want to be a champion public servant,” indicating his state of mind following his recent victory over Antonio Margarito.
“Boxing is a source of pride, it’s my job and I have to take advantage of my youth for it,” Pacquiao continued. “But now I’ve to focus on serving the people of Sarangani.”
Pacquiao was sworn into office in May as congressman of the lone province of Sarangani, where his wife Jinkee was born.
“Pacman” has been clear about the fact that he plans to retire in the near future to further dedicate himself to politics and satisfy ongoing requests of his mother, Dionisia, who has been calling for retirement for some time.
Pacquiao clarified that their relationship had not been damaged by virtue of the request. “I talked with my mother and told her I can still fight in the ring,” Pacquiao said. “I understand my mother. No parent wants to see his or her child getting hurt.”
Against Margarito, Pacquiao gave up 17 pounds in the ring and close to five inches. Despite the obvious advantages, Margarito was still rendered ineffective, due to Pacquiao cleverly avoiding his shots and dishing out devastating combinations.
On the question of retirement, Pacquiao, 31, stated that he would “certainly” retire before the age of 35.
He also confirmed he would be willing to face any opponent in his relevant weight classes so long as terms are fair.
Since his last fight, matchmakers have been salivating over Pacquiao’s next opponent. Promoter Bob Arum recently said that Shane Mosley would be a good match, if negotiations with Floyd Mayweather Jr. fail to come to a head.
Pacquiao is widely considered the best boxer on the planet. He is currently the WBO welterweight champion of the world and the WBC junior middleweight champion.
