Manny Ramirez to be placed on waivers
Manny Ramirez’s days in "La-La-Land" may be over as sources have indicated that the Los Angeles Dodgers will place the slugger on waivers sometime this week. Ramirez has been on the disabled list (DL) for an extended amount of time, and starting Monday, he has been made eligible to be placed on waivers, coming off the DL.
Unless Ramirez exercises his no-trade clause, he will be on his way out by August 31st, the last day in which he can sign with a team and be eligible to play in the playoffs. Ramirez could be of use to a team making a push for the playoffs or one that is on their way to the playoffs. Truthfully, Ramirez is phenomenal in the postseason and it is perhaps the best baseball he plays all year.
Ramirez may have an expensive contract, but the structure gives teams an advantage in signing him now. He is only scheduled to make $1.1 million for the rest of the season and $3.3 million in deferred salary. Most of his deal has been paid up-front so the gamble of putting up with his antics may be worth his potential production value.
The only thing that may get in the way is Ramirez’s full no-trade clause, and if he vetoes a trade, then the Dodgers would have to activate him and would not be able to trade him until the end of the season. Ramirez can also ask for compensation in exchange for accepting a trade or being claimed off waivers by another team.
The 38 year-old has already said this would be his last season with the Dodgers, as his contract expires at the end of the season. He’s already missed 59 games this season with injuries and the Dodgers have continued to slip in the playoff race. However, perhaps Ramirez is still worth the gamble for some teams in search of an extra slugger for the final stretch of the season.
