Manny Steward furious over Alexander Povetkin-Ruslan Chagaev bout for vacant WBA heavyweight title
Manny Steward is not happy at all with the fight between the undefeated Russian Alexander Povetkin and Ruslan Chagaev for the World Boxing Association’s vacant heavyweight title, as he thinks the Caracas-based WBA has done injustice with his fighter, Wladimir
Klitschko.
This is the same title which Dr. Steelhammer, Wladimir Klitschko, a winner of 56 of his 59 professional fights, with 49 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, won from the Hayemaker, David Haye, last month on July 2, 2011 at the Hamburg’s Football
Stadium in Germany.
However, now WBA has upgraded the 6 ft 6 in Ukrainian giant, Klitschko, to a ‘super’ champion and have put the regular version of the title on the line in a fight between Povetkin and Chagaev which will take place tonight at the Messehalle Arena, Erfurt
in Germany.
Therefore Steward, who was in Klitschko’s corner during his bout with the brash Londoner, Haye, is furious with the WBA, as he reckons his fighter earned the title after a lot of hard work.
Steward said, “This is a crazy, crazy situation. My fighter won the title but he's been made a 'super' champion or something since then; boxing will suffer if this type of thing keeps on happening.”
The 31-year-old White Lion, Povetkin, who has won all of his 21 professional fights, with 15 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, on the other hand is very excited upon getting a world title shot.
Povetkin told media it does not bother him if he is fighting for a regular version of the title, as the boxer thinks to be a world champion, one needs to fight the world’s best.
Povetkin remarked, “To be honest I don’t care when people talk about a regular championship or a super championship—a world champion is a world champion!”
“To become world champion I have to fight the best fighters in the world, so I mean if I win this title now I will fight the best people and I will improve myself and show everybody that I’m the best. For me it’s a world championship, and this is what matters
at the end,” he said.
