I have no idea why he cannot be 24 no one active is 24 and it is not retired? The only 99 in LA is Gretzky.

Dodger website has him listed as 99 on the active roster but when you click on his bio he is going to be 28.

what the h**l does it matter what number he's wearing.  the dodgers and all their fans should be greatful they have a player with that much talent in their organization.  so quite complaing about what number is on his back and watch him try to turn that sorry club around.

24 is retired in honor of former manager Walter Alston.  Manny wanted 34 but that is "unofficially" retired in honor of Fernando Valenzuela.  I'm not sure exactly why he got 99 and I don't think Manny knows either.

The only other 99 that I know of is So Taguchi of the Phillies.

yes, 24 is retired by the Dodgers, that's why he can't wear it.

as for why he chose 99, i have no idea.  His thought process was probably somewhere along the lines as "well i can't be 24, well whats the highest number I can be?  99....ok....so 100 isn't any option?"
