Manny sits on bench, Strasburg’s surgery on Friday
Manny Ramirez never fails to make the headlines and on Tuesday the 38-year-old did so again, without actually playing for his new team.
Meeting the media for the first time as a Chicago White Sox Manny decided to be, well, Manny, informing the club he will need a translator, despite being a fluent English speaker. Manny’s appearance in front of the media was his first since spring training when he was with the LA Dodgers.
Not only did Ramirez speak via a translator, he also wore sunglasses indoors while answering questions from journalists, leaving people to ask whether Manny is actually taking baseball seriously anymore.
Ramirez is batting .311 this season with eight homers and 40 RBIs, but has played in just 66 games this season following a plethora of injuries which have placed the 38-year-old on the disabled list three times this season.
The outfielder was set to make his debut as a pinch-hitter for the White Sox yesterday but after AJ Pierzynski hit a tiebreaking three-run homerun in the ninth inning there was no need for Ramirez to bat. Ramirez should make his debut for the White Sox on Wednesday.
Elsewhere it was announced on Tuesday night that young pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg will undergo surgery on Friday to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Strasburg will have Tommy John surgery and is expected to miss up to 18 months while he rehabilitates his arm.
Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo is optimistic Strasburg will overcome the injury.
“He is dealing with it like a professional. He's very determined to get it done and start the process,” Rizzo said.
Strasburg went 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA this season whilst also striking out 92 batters.
