Manny to the Marlins?

The Marlins trade some prospects to the Pirates for Jason Bay and turn around and trade Bay to the Red Sox for Manny. If it is going to happen it will be today. What impact would this have for both the Red Sox and Marlins in the pennant race?

  1. idk man...this is crazy.

i honestly dont think that it will be the same without manny.

    :(

  2. red sox and pirates would get worse slightly, and marlins would get waayayyyyy better

  3. I believe it will happen and I believe it shows that the Marlins are ready to make a legitimate push to the playoffs this season.

  4. That would make sense for all teams involved, maybe too much sense actually.  Bay would be a welcome addition in Boston, as Taylor pointed out the numbers are close to each but Boston gets away from the headache early.  Florida is known to take on guys for the quick run in their successful years so they would love to upgrade their OF and offense all at once.  Pittsburgh would love to get more prospects from anyone, they are building a great minor league for themselves at everyone else's expense.  Florida uses Manny for the quick run this year and then lets him leave without having to pay 20+ million per year to him, if they make the playoffs it was worth it for them.

  5. The Red Sox pick up a quality OF in Bay, who won't be much different than Manny.  Bay is hitting .282 with 22 HR and 64 RBI's while Manny is at .299 with 20 HR and 68 RBI's.  But Bay is 7 years younger and $14,000,000 less expensive than Manny.  The Red Sox will still be just about the same team with the same chance at the pennant.

If the Marlins can get Manny, that will make them much better as he is an improvement over current corner OF's Josh Willingham and Jeremy Hermida.  But will Florida be willing to pick up Manny's contract?

    Ramirez '08 salary: $20,000,000

Marlins '08 team salary: $22,650,000 (Highest paid player: Kevin Gregg - $2,500,000)

If the Marlins pull the trigger, then they become a better contender and it just might push them over the top into the play-offs.

  6. There are two aspects to this proposed deal that I don't like.

    1. Losing Manny -- but, oh well. If Ramirez cannot or will not be motivated to play in Boston, fine, go elsewhere. His FHOF cred is what buys him as much enabling as he gets, but enough. He's Scott Boras' headache now. Hey, is there still time to sign Bonds?

    2. Giving money to Florida as part of the deal, subsidizing the rest of Ramirez' 2008 salary. I'm sorry, but -- F**K THAT NOISE!!! That bastich Loria gets huge, huge amounts of revenue sharing -- make him spend just a bit of it for once. (I realize that, for me, this is a matter of principle, and that isn't a song that ever plays in owners' suites. But I'm serious. If the Red Sox are going to be paying Ramirez, he should be playing in Fenway Park in home whites. He's due, what?, maybe $6M the rest of the season, around that much. Loria can afford that, easy... so let him.)

  7. The Red Sox will not make the playoffs without Manny and the Marlins wont make the playoff because they don't got pitching.

  8. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! NO NO NO Say it isn't so!!!

  9. Does anybody really think the Marlins want to cashier some of their future for a long shot at the title this year?  They STILL have the lowest payroll in baseball.

  10. Go Marlins!!!
