Mansell Hit The Barrier Hard At The Le Mans Series
It was only the twentieth minute of the race when Nigel Mansell, at his debut for the Le Mans series crashed out heavily at this ever famous endurance race.
The Beechdean Motorsport car hit the barriers right after Mulsanne corner, at the seventeenth minute after the race started. Apparently, it was after the car suffered from a punctured tyre.
Mansell, the old Formula One driver was alongside his sons Leo and Greg, as a part of a three-driver line-up at Beechdean. After the crash he remained in his car for quite a lot of minutes before he was carried into an ambulance that rushed down to the track after the incident.
The fifty three year old driver was taken straight to the circuit's medical center at around 3:40 pm local time for on spot medical assessment.
After the crash, trackside marshals had to repair the armco barriers which got damaged from the incident. The safety car kept deployed at the track for about half an hour till the maintenance work went on at the site of the crash.
The incident let the number three Peugeot of Pedro Lamy take the lead that stayed at the front till the green flag was spread out as the safety car period ended. The other cars of the Peugeot factory, driven by Franck Montagny and Marc Gené took hold of the second and third positions respectively.
As they race regained its pace, Scotland's Allan McNish held fifth place in the number seven Audi.
It was within the next hour that Mansell was taken to the medical centre in another ambulance from here he was shifted to the local hospital at 4:10 pm local time. The whole incident left the driver’s fans in much concern and grief as they waited to hear of the driving sensation. Later, the race's official website gave an update claiming that Mansell was "fine" now, after receiving "a bump on the head". Moreover, it informed that there was nothing to get worried about and that he was completely out of danger.
Nigel Ernest James Mansell, born on 8th of August 1953 in Worcestershire, is a famous British racing driver who had been successful to claim two of the most celebrated racing titles. He won the Formula One World Championship in the year 1992 and CART World Series, the following year. When Mansell moved over to CART, he was already the reigning F1 champion, who made his mark as being the very first person to win the CART title in his debut racing season, also giving him the honour to be the only person in the history of racing to hold both titles at the same time.
Mansell drove fifteen seasons of Formula One, with spending his last two full seasons of top-level racing in the CART series. He stands as the most successful British Formula One driver ever when it comes to the number of race wins, with his record of thirty one victories. He stands at the fourth place on the Formula One race winners’ record behind Michael Schumacher, Alain Prost, and Ayrton Senna. He also stands among the top 10 Formula One drivers of the sport’s history by Murray Walker, the commentator for Formula One for a long time. Also in 2008, ESPN, one of the most viewed American sports television network, ranked him at the twenty forth place on their top drivers’ list of all-times. Times Online, also ranked him ninth of the fifty greatest Formula 1 drivers of all times, in a list that included drivers such as Alain Prost, Jackie Stewart, Ayrton Senna and Jim Clark. He is also an honoured inductee to the International Motorsports Hall of Fame since the year 2008.
