Manu Ginobili unsure about his future in Argentinean Basketball – NBA News
Manu Ginobili has not given any indication regarding whether he will continue to represent his home country, Argentina in international basketball competitions, or whether he will retire.
Ginobili just led Argentina into the semi finals of the London Olympics, where they lost to team USA 109-83, bringing an end to their dreams of winning another gold medal.
"A lot of things can happen. I'm 35. I know the chances are less every year, but I can't say I am retiring because I don't know," said Ginobili after the loss yesterday.
Ginobili was the standout player for Argentina throughout the tournament, and finished with a team high 18 points in the semi final game as well. He has been the main basketball star for his country in the past decade, but is unsure
if he will be fit enough to compete in the FIBA Basketball championship in 2014, which is dubbed as the “World Cup of Basketball”.
Ginobili is part of a golden generation of players, who introduced the world to Argentina as a basketball powerhouse. Along with Luis Scola, Ginobili had a formidable and impressive run for his country, winning the 2002 FIBA championship
and then winning gold in the 2004 Olympics.
They finished with a bronze medal in the 2008 Olympics and now have another opportunity to finish with a bronze medal when they take on Russia in the bronze medal game on Sunday.
“We won two medals. We got a chance now to get another one," said Ginobili about the game. “It's probably going to be one of the highlights of my career, this group. I'm very proud of representing my country with these guys. We
are trying to make our legend even bigger by getting another medal,” said Ginobili about his run with the national team.
Ginobili and Scola have helped Argentina rise as a basketball team, and the South Americans are currently ranked 3rd in the world behind U.S.A and Spain. He has no plans of retiring from the NBA, where he plays an important
position with the San Antonio Spurs.
However, after serving his home team for more than 12 years, Ginobili might feel it is time to hang his shoes and pass the responsibility on to younger guys in the team.
