On the Mazda Miata, there were 5 gears. They added another one but why did they make that one lower than the rest instead of higher?

  2. Well, this is going to be hard for me to explain, but here it goes. The way gears operate have to do with the RPM's. The faster your car goes to a higher RPM, the faster you will go. To accomplish this task auto makers try to distribute the gears based on the power and speed of the car.

Mazda felt that if they added the gear in that certain area the car would go faster because it would reach the designated RPM quicker.

I tried to explain it as best as I could. It might not be what you are talking about, but this is the way I interpreted it.
