Can driving a manual car increase your long term risk of developing arthritis etc in the future. Is anyone suffering problems now as a result of driving a manual car over the years?

  1. I drove a manual/standard until I was 50, then switched to an automatic, so I was driving a standard for about 30 years.  I switched to an automatic because of arthritis in my knees.  The worst was the left because of being constantly on/off the clutch in city traffic.

It never occurred to me that it was caused by driving a standard, because I also have arthritis in my back, which was diagnosed several years before my knees.  I'm also overweight which causes more pressure on the knees.

I don't think the arthritis was caused by the manual transmission because I can think of a lot of things that would cause more wear & tear on the joints.  However, if you were driving for several hours every day in city traffic, I think it could be a cause.
