Question:

Manual or Automatic Transmission?

I am buying a 2008 Scion tC and originally I wanted a manual transmission. After a talk with my parents they believe that an automatic is much safer because it requires less concentration and distraction. I am dead set on the manual now and believe that it is in no way a distraction to the driver. I actually believe that it will help the driving experience because you will need to focus on the driving and not the relaxation of the automatic transmission which allows eating and talking on the cell phone. As you can see safety is the great debate between me and my parents. Please let me know what transmission you think is "safer" and why that may be.

  1. Automatic transmissions have a "park" setting, which keeps the car from rolling if the parking brake fails, unless the hill is steep.  Manuals do not.

  2. The automatic since you care more about cell phones and eating while driving.

  3. whos writing the cheque. thats who will make this decision.

  4. If more drivers realized your way of thinking, the roads would be much safer! Get the manual transmission, once you learn how to drive it, every thing just comes naturally!!

  5. If you don't know how to drive a stick, you will be more likely to have an accident, or cause an accident during the time you are learning, which wouldn't be very long....several days or so.

But once you get it, shifting and stuff will come natural. But another issue arises: with two cars being the same with just the tranny being different, the manual will perform better. This opens up the possibility for the driver to "hot rod" around a bit, thus increasing the possibility of them having an accident.

But overall, I've never heard of a car being more likely to be in an accident because it was manual. Manual is more fun to drive, though!

  6. If they are worried about the safety of a manual transmision, they must be just sick when you cros the street by yourself.  There can be a lot of safety issues but this is not one

  7. If youre young and not have an good experience and skills of driving car, automatic is the best. But the other point is, if someone who has 10 years of experience of driving car, he/she cannot use automatic transmission properly.
