Manual vs. Automatic transmissions?

So what about driving a stick makes it more fuel efficient than an automatic?

The manual is essentially LOCKED once the clutch is release.  Automatic torque converter gets about 10% hotter than manual. That 10% heat has to come from somewhere.

But some modern torque converter also locks to make them more fuel efficient.
