Manuel Fumic is targeting the gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games
Manuel Fumic is targeting the London Olympic Games scheduled in August as the biggest goal of his 2012 season.
He is looking ahead to represent the German National Team at the event and is optimistic to fill his bag with nothing less than gold during the event.
The 29-year-old is currently pursuing his season’s goals with Cannondale Factory Racing Team and is eager to find his peak form during his third appearance at the Olympics event.
Manuel cited that he will make full use of the experience that he has gained during his past two participations at the race.
He was amongst the youngest athletes during the Athens Olympics 2004, and came close to victory during the 2008 version of the competition in Beijing.
Fumic had a puncture in the final 3 kilometres, which ruined his chances for the podium and he had to settle for the 11th position.
The German will still have to impress the selectors to ensure his participation for the 2012 version of the game.
He has to finish amongst the top 15 during the World Cup rounds scheduled later in spring.
Manuel is hoping to achieve the honours during the first round of the MTB World Cup Cross Country scheduled on March 17th to 18th, 2012.
The event is scheduled in Pietermaritzburg and it will be interesting to see if Fumic manages to impress the selectors for the mega contest.
He told Cyclingnews, "I'd like to race a solid World Cup season and do the Olympics in London, then the world championships at the end of the year in Austria".
Manuel understands that he will receive a stiff competition during the South African race. The event is an Olympics qualifier and the competition level will touch its heights.
"I've already seen the course and it suits me. What I need now is to compete well in the first World Cups so that I feel more comfortable and will know that I can beat the good guys in the front," he voiced.
He will be accompanied by Marco Fontana, Martin Gujan and Jeremiah Bishop during the World Cup round.
He briefed that his side, Cannondale Factory Racing Team is definitely amongst the strongest sides of the team and will help him during the first World Cup round.
