Manuel Neuer delighted with a win in his first official game for Bayern Munich - DFB Pokal news
Newly recruited Bayern Munich goalkeeper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Manuel-Neuer-c23424, expressed delight after ending up on a winning side in his first official game for the club. Neuer featured in a DFB Pokal first round game against the second division side, Eintracht Braunschweig,
on Monday, August 1, and managed to keep a clean sheet in front of a massive crowd.
The Bavarians emerged as comfortable 3-0 winners on the night courtesy strikes from Mario Gomez, Bastian Schwensteiger and Thomas Muller.
Neuer was handed over his debut for the club by the manager Jupp Heynckes and the shot-stopper accepted the opportunity with both hands. The goalkeeper was never really tested by the underdogs as Munich kept the pressure of the opponent’s goal. The former
Schalke man kept a clean sheet and made a perfect start to his Munich campaign. He was all praise for his defence, who stood firm and never really allowed any opening for the home side.
The 25-year-old also expressed pleasure at being adjudged the 2010/11 German footballer of the year. The custodian was surprised at the decision as the honours could have gone in favour of his Munich teammate, Mario Gomez, Neuer reckons. Gomez was the top
goalscorer last season where Bayern finished third on the table behind Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund.
In an interview to a local website, Neuer enthused, "I am very happy and proud. But I want more. I thought that Mario [Gomez] would win the award because of the goals he scored for Bayern. He said to me that he is fine with my victory. It was my first official
match for Bayern Munich, so it was a very special one. I am happy to be here and I am happy that we won the game."
The shot-stopper was also looking forward to the 2011/12 Bundesliga campaign and wished to win the title in his debut season for the club. He was confident about the chances of his team this year and hoped that Gomez could repeat performances from the last
season where he scored in almost every game he played for the Bavarians.
Bayern Munich will host Borussia Monchengladbach in their opening game of the new campaign on August 7.
