Manuel Perez unanimously wins over Edgar Santana to win NABA light welterweight gold - Boxing news
In the second bout of ESPN2 ‘Friday Night Fights’ show, Manuel Perez created a huge upset and grasped not only his career's first NABA light welterweight title but also conquered the toughest opponent of his career, Edgar Santana, in a 10-round brawl unanimously.
The ring for the bout was stretched at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino situated at Dover, Delaware, USA. The episode was headlined by the brawl between Juan Carlos Burgos and Cristobal Cruz. Juan successfully retained his WBC Silver featherweight gold and nailed
an opponent far more experienced than him.
Perez, infamous as Manos, does not even reside in World Boxing Associations (WBA’s) top 100 light welterweight rankings as compared to Edgar who secures the 80th rank. Despite of his small experience and low-cadre boxing abilities Perez was able to collect
a unanimous win against Edgar by collecting 94-96 on all the three cards.
The scores show that the bout was an extremely close one and Edgar might have grasped the title provided he would have put some more efforts and sweat in the bout. Edgar started pounding and pummelling Perez in almost the 5th round and onwards but the young
American did not allow the Puerto Rican to bash him easily and resisted till the end of the bout.
Perez before the brawl had an experience of 24 bouts. He has won 16 of his bouts and only four of them by knockout. His stats really cannot impress even a rookie especially his knockout ability. The only aspect that he relies heavily on is his resilience.
Edgar on the other hand has a bit charismatic resume.
Infamous as the ‘La Melasa’, Edgar had been in a total 29 bouts. He has won 26 encounters and a whopping 17 of them by kayoing the opponents out cold. His stats and experience both overshadow Perez substantially. Moreover Santana had collected wins against
men such as Josesito Lopez, Dairo Esalas and others.
Perez by his impressive pugilism countered even Edgar’s height and hence the reach advantage. With this win Manuel has gained much. He has not only excelled in the rankings but also collected the NABA’s apex light welterweight title for the first time. Perez
now has 17 wins in a total 25 brawls and Edgar has collected his careers fourth defeat in a total 30 skirmishes.
