Manulife Financial LPGA Classic 2012: Lexi Thompson tumbles to fifth spot at the end of the second round
American Lexi Thompson, who got off to a stunning start in the first round of the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic 2012, fired a 69 in the second round to tumble to the fifth position on the leaderboard.
The inaugural tournament being played at Waterloo, Canada, is featuring a strong field including titans like Paula Creamer, Suzann Pettersen, Stacy Lewis, Inbee Park, Karin Sjodin, Jodi Ewart, Nicole Hage, Amy Yang, Angela Stanford, I.K. Kim and Vicky Hurst.
Analysts said that despite the strong field, Thompson stood to her round in the match. The American star could not start the first round on the set schedule, as the match had to be suspended due to a threat of lightening and rough weather conditions.
Playing her round on a new schedule, Thompson did her best and got off to a sensible start. She fired a 66 on the opening day to grab the T5 spot on the leaderboard.
The young prodigy looked completely fired up in the second round, as she registered 3 birdies. However, due to miscalculation on the difficult par-3 17th, she ended up draining a bogey.
Speaking to the media about her performance, Thompson said that she is glad that she got off to a very nice start and beat most of the big names in the first round.
The American prodigy pointed out that she was lucky to have the crowd by her side, as it helped her ramp up pressure on other contenders.
She said that Canadian spectators are amazing, and she looks forward to receiving the same support from them in the next two rounds.
“It feels amazing. I mean, the crowds are just crazy out here, they're always cheering you on. That's a great feeling to have,” the golfing sensation said.
Thompson went on to say that Waterloo is one of the best courses in the world, as she found it easier to make balanced putts on almost all the holes.
“It was definitely a little easier. Some pins you could definitely be aggressive on. I ended up not making so many birdies, but hopefully save them for the weekend,” she added.
