To re-enter the US, you need a valid US passport if you are a US citizen. If you are a legal resident of the US then you need a valid Re-Entry Permit.

you need visa if you are not an american, if you are a registered alien  then its ok  depending on ywhat passport you hold

I agree with shoe s.  You will need a passport to get into the us.  If you are citizen of another country you will have to check what is requied to enter the us.
