Mara Daughter of the Nile. So Confused!?

Question

I'm reading this book for my summer reading and i really do not understand anything. Especially in the first few chapters. Can somebody please help cause i only have about a week to finish it. I really am trying!! thnx in advance. =)

Mara is a slave in ancient Egypt;  she is chosen as an interpreter and becomes a spy in the royal palace of Thebes.  She actually becomes a double agent.
