Marach/Peya outplay Cermak/Polasek to reach the quarter-finals – Monte Carlo Rolex Masters 2012
Austrian duo of Oliver Marach and Alexander Peya registered a huge upset in the second round of the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters, upsetting the eighth seeded Czech-Slovakian combination of Frantisek Cermak and Filip Polasek on Wednesday.
The underdog competitors took one hour and 24 minutes to register a, 7-6(4), 6-3, win over the hot favourite team.
It was a fairly poised contest earlier on, with both teams staining hard to take the early advantage and a gruelling battle was witnessed straight up. Cermak and Polasek were stretched to their limits and eventually the unseeded
Austrians reigned supreme in the tie-breaker round to bag the opening set. Once getting into their winning groove, Marach and Peya launched their onslaught in the following set and raced through the games to conclude an emphatic victory.
Marach and Peya delivered 64 per cent of their first serve on target, winning 35 out of 46 points on it but also coughed five double faults. The Austrian crafted three break points in the matchup and converted all of them en route
to victory, whilst the eighth seeded duo kept squandering away priceless opportunities throughout the contest. Cermak and Polasek had nine break points but could merely cash in two opportunities to finish on the losing side in the end.
The Czech-Slovakian duo suffered a vital blow in the very first game of the match to fall back 0-1 but retaliated after six games to make their way back in business. Cermak and Polasek registered their first serve break in the
eighth game to level the scores at 4-4 and dragged the opening set into the tie-breaker round. The Austrians registered two mini-breaks in the decider and pocketed the first set at 7-6(4).
Unseeded Marach and Peya went on for a four-game killing spree in the following set, rocketing away to a 4-0 lead with two successive break points. Cermak and Polasek resisted with a break point in the fifth game but their opponents
kept their lead in-tact. Marach and Peya held their remaining serves to keep their nose ahead of their superior-seeded opponent and the matchup eventually finished at 6-3 in the favour of the Austrians.
