Marach/Peya outplay Cermak/Polasek to win doubles title – German Tennis Championships 2011
Austrians Oliver Marach and Alexander Peya knocked out Frantisek Cermak of Czech Republic and Filip Polasek of Slovakia in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 in the title match at the German Tennis Championships in Hamburg on Sunday. The Austrian
pair needed just an hour and six minutes to overpower their opponents in a one-sided contest.
Marach/Peya and the Czech/Slovakian pair broke each other on a number of occasions in the opening set. The Austrians drew the first blood as they broke Cermak and Polasek in the first game but failed to hold their own serve in
the next game to level the score at 1-1. Marach and Peya broke again in the third game and this time they consolidated on the break of serve to grab a 3-1 lead. Cermak and Polasek leveled the score once again as they broke back in the eighth game to take the
score to 4-4. The Austrians claimed the decisive break in the ninth game and served out the set at 5-4.
Marach and Peya kept their first serve percentage at 70 and smacked a single ace in the first set. The Austrians won 50 percent of the second service points and 38 percent of the first return points in the opening set. Marach and
Peya converted three of the five break points they received but failed to save both break points they faced in the first set.
With winning momentum on their side, the Austrians thrashed their opponents, dropping only a single game in the second set. Marach and Peya broke the Czech/Slovakian duo three times to bag the set 6-1.
The Austrian team hit 78 percent of the first deliveries, converting 71 percent of them into points in the second set. Marach and Peya troubled the Czech/Slovakian combination with their accurate returns, winning an amazing 62
percent of the first return points.
Marach said, talking to the newsmen, "It’s very nice [to win my 10th title] at a big tournament like Hamburg. I was even happier for Alex as it was his first title. I’m also happy that we took revenge for the Belgrade final, when
we lost against the same guys. Today we played really well.”
Peya added, "It’s a very good feeling [to win my first ATP World Tour title]. I had five chances before; I missed them; so it’s definitely good to finally get the title. I hope it’s not going to be the last one. The whole week
we played very solid, very good doubles."
Marach and Peya took revenge of their loss at the hands of Cermak and Polasek in the final of the Serbia Open.
