Marach/Qureshi dump Delgado/Marray to move into the quarterfinal – PTT Thailand Open 2011
Top seeded in the doubles category, the duo of Oliver Marach of Austria and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi from Pakistan cleared the opening round of the PTT Thailand Open, defeating the British pair of Jamie Delgado and Jonathan Marray,
on Wednesday afternoon.
The contest was played on the indoor hard courts of the Impact Arena, in Bangkok, Thailand, with Marach and Qureshi winning in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(1). The top seeded duo took one hour and twenty seven minutes of play to make
a berth in the quarter-finals of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 350 tournament.
Delgado and Marray failed to withstand the fury of their opponents in the game and gave them an easy passage to the round of eight. The Britons posed some resistance in the second set but eventually lost the matchup in the tie
breaker round in the end. Delgado and Marray were led down by their error-ridden game in the contest, as they coughed seven double faults to gift some easy points to the top seeded opponents.
Marach and Qureshi delivered 71 per cent of their serve on target and clinched 37 out of 46 first serve points in the matchup to come out as the winner. They broke Delgado and Marray two out of five times in the contest and successfully
defended four out of five break points they faced in the competition to dispose of the unseeded duo in style.
The opening set witnessed just one break point conversion and it came from the racquets of Marach and Qureshi in the ninth game to give them a 5-4 lead. The top seeded pair served out of the first set at 6-4 to get one up in the
contest.
Marach and Qureshi broke their opponents in the very first game of the second set but Delgado and Marray regrouped to backfire in the sixth game. A tie breaker round came in to play at 6-6 and Marach and Qureshi raced through the
decider to conclude a comprehensive victory at 7-6(1).
Marach and Qureshi will take on the combination of Jamie Murray from the Great Britain and Andre Sa of Brazil in the next round to fight for a place in the semis of the PTT Thailand Open. Murray and Sa won a doubles title in Moselle
last Sunday and then disposed off the local wild card duo of Danai Udomchoke and Kittipong Wachiramanowong in the opening round to book a date with the top seeded pair in the quarters.
