Question:

Maracyn Treatment Not Over, But It's Water Change Day. What should I do?

My ryukin had "mouth fungus" (Columnaris, not a fungus), and so I started a Maracyn treatment on the aquarium. But it's water change and gravel vac day today/tomorrow and it's also supposed to be the last day of Maracyn on Sunday. Is it safe to change water or will the medicinal effect drop severely? I tested the water and the nitrites are up so I need to do a water change soon.

  1. As suggested, you can just dose the new water that you add to the tank.

If your nitrite level is high then you have a probelm with the filtration/cycle not working propelrly.

This may be due ot the anti-biotics affecting the filter bacteria, or it may be under-lying cause of your fish getting sick in the first place.

I suggest you contine to test, and be prepared to do some extra water changes in the coming weeks as required. It will be a good idea anyway, to get rid of the medications once they have done their job.

But pay special attention to your water tests for the next couple of weeks or you may end up with the same problems back again.

    Good luck

  2. Change the water and everything like you do...Count the number of gallons of water you take out..and then add the suggested dose of Marcyn as per the the gallons of water taken out...it wont hurt anything...and then like you said its the last day tomorrow...do as suggested for the medication process...

  3. Just wait until the treatment is finished.  One day won't make a difference to your water change schedule.
