Maradona – Still the coach of Argentina?
The Argentineans did not manage to impress many fans as they did not perform very well during the FIFA World Cup 2010’s qualifiers. They did not manage to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in the first qualifying round and as a result, they had to go for the play-offs and face Uruguay. The match was filled with excitement and Argentinean players came down to face the Uruguayans. The match ended with the final score-line 2-1, as the Argentineans won the match in the last second when a Uruguayan defender suffered from a red-card and the Argentineans won a free kick right outside the 18 yard box. Diego Maradona’s team was able to score a goal on that particular free-kick as they emerged victorious that night.
The 1986 Argentinean legend Diego Maradona was appointed as a permanent manager of the Argentinean football team, as he started recruiting players for his FIFA World Cup 2010’s campaign. He was criticized about many things, as he did not take any players that deserved a spot in the Argentinean team. These players were mostly defenders, and defence was the part where the Argentineans actually lacked players during the FIFA World Cup 2010. Players like Javier Zenetti, Cambiasso and Gabriel Milito were not included in the squad as Samuel and Demichelis became the first team centre backs.
Argentina started their FIFA World Cup 2010 by facing Nigeria, as they were paired up with Nigeria, South Korea and Greece in the group stages. In the first match, they started off with Lionel Messi showing the world why he is called the best player in the world, as he made an early run in the box and won a corner. Gabriel Heinze scored a goal as he the “amazing” Nigerian goalkeeper was totally beaten by his header that he struck right in the top corner. Argentina won the match 1-0, as they started to train for their next match against the Koreans. The next match was full of excitement. It marked the first hat-trick of the FIFA World Cup 2010, as Gonzalo Higuain found the net three times. It was obviously not without the help of Lionel Messi and Sergio Kun Aguero who assisted him with amazing through balls. The last match of the group stages was against a “tight” defensive team, Greece.
Argentina was finding it difficult to score goals but later in the second half Demichelis found the net from a corner and then later Palmero scored the second to seal the deal for the Argentineans. Lionel Messi was the captain for the Argentinean team but he was unfortunate enough that he could not score a goal throughout the FIFA World Cup 2010. Later, in the pre quarter finals, Diego Maradona’s side had to face the South American team, Mexico.
Mexicans started to test the Argentinean defence as they kept on penetrating in and kept on taking long shots. Soon Argentina were a goal ahead, as a pass from Messi was headed inside the goal by Carlos Tevez. Even though the goal was an offside, the referee still gave a green light to it and Argentina had a one goal advantage. Soon, a defensive error by the Mexicans helped the Argentineans gain a 2 goal margin as Gonzalo Higuain scored his 4th of the tournament. During the second half, Carlos Tevez scored a remarkable goal from outside the box, as the keeper was left with no chance and the score-line showed a 3 goal advantage for the Argentineans. Mexicans however, did not leave the stadium without a consolation. The new Manchester United signing Javier Hernandez, who was also the fastest player in the FIFA World Cup 2010, managed to get his feet passed two of the Argentinean defenders and scored a goal to make it 3-1 as the match ended and the Argentineans qualified for the quarter finals.
The quarter final match was a total disaster for the South American side; as they went on to face the Germans. The match ended with the Germans scoring 4 goals on the Argentineans, as Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, Gonzalo Higuain, Angel Di Maria could not manage to score a goal, and the match ended 4-0 for the Germans.
After that, defeat the future of Diego Maradona as a coach was hanging by a thread as the defeat that he suffered was even though the first one but was very humiliating for the Argentinean nation. Right now Maradona is “on the brink” of learning his fate. He might be the coach in the future and he might not be: “The Argentinean football Association has to decide his future,” as the 49 year old is going to meet them in Ezeiza.
