Maradona to be
Blackburn Rovers manager ?
It seems that the Blackburn management have someone in mind to replace the recently dismissed Sam Allardyce as manager of the club. The dust has yet to settle on the axing of the popular Englishman, but reports
are already coming in about the new owner’s ambitious plans. It seems that Blackburn are looking to the retired legend, Diego Maradona to take up the reins at the club.
The troubled Argentinean star recently managed his national side at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. His controversial stint ended when Argentina were knocked out of the semifinals in spectacular fashion,
losing 4-0 to Germany. The result ultimately led to his replacement by Sergio Batista after the tournament. Blackburn are hoping to tempt the star back into a managerial role in their efforts to rebuild the club’s image.
Maradona is a national hero in his home country, Argentina. He was instrumental in the South American side’s 1986 World Cup victory. His spells with Italian club Napoli and Spanish giants Barcelona has earned
him cult status in Europe as well. In 2000, he was voted the FIFA Player of the Century, a title he shares with Brazilian legend Pele. With such a celebrated history, Maradona is seen by the club’s new Indian owners as the perfect person to take the English
club to new heights. An insider said,
‘Maradona is seen as the right profile for the VH Group. He could be offered the manager's job, the general manager's job or even technical director.’
Since leading his country to the semifinals in South Africa, Maradona has made it clear that he would like to return to a managerial role in the future. However, the Argentinean has never coached in Europe and it will likely take
a while for him to settle if he does decide to fill Sam Allardyce’s shoes. Currently, Steve Keane is acting as caretaker manager for Blackburn. It remains to be seen whether a deal with Maradona can be struck, but for the next few days, all eyes will be on
Blackburn as they adjust to the absence of Big Sam.
