Marc-Andre Fleury blocks 33 as Pittsburgh Penguins shutout New York Islanders 3-0 -NHL Match Update
Pittsburgh’s goalie, Marc-Andre Fleury earned his first shutout of the season by blocking 33 shots taken by the New York team on his net as the Penguins shutout the Islanders, 3-0, Tuesday night at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New
York, United States.
The Penguins made a goal in each period to steadily keep themselves in the game by not overworking even as they were outshot by the young Islanders club in the first two periods.
"There were some pretty good ones (saves), but that's just part of being a goalie", Fleury said. "It doesn't matter if they're simple or hard, you have to get out there and make the save to keep your team it the game. At other times they've saved my butt.
That's how a team can be successful".
Evgeni Malkin, one of Pittsburgh’s top forwards, made his comeback after suffering a sore right knee in their second matchup of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season against the Calgary Flames on Saturday, October 8.
The team welcomed back the superstar shooter with their fourth straight victory, which has now moved them to the top spot in the league with 16 points, over Washington Capitals in the Eastern Conference and Dallas Stars in the West, both who have 14 points.
Pascal Dupuis scored in the final minutes of the opening period on an assist by Brooks Orpik while Richard Park added his second of the season 21 seconds into the next. Jordan Staal potted the final and his sixth of the season with exactly two minutes left
to go in the third period, giving Dupuis an assist and securing the match.
Both teams gave each other two power play opportunities, which they respectively managed to kill as well.
"We had some really good chances and it's on a lot of us to put them away", Islanders player, John Tavares said. "Sometimes it takes an ugly one. We have to find a way to get one of those. In saying that, it was much better offensively than the past road
trip".
Pittsburgh has two matchups remaining to finish off this month, as is the situation with the New York Islanders. Both Pittsburgh and Islanders have the next contest scheduled against each other, but this time on the home-ice of the Penguins, making it tough
on New York.
