Marc De Maar wins the fifth stage of the Tour of Britain 2012
Marc De Maar of Team UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling wins the fifth stage of the Tour of Britain after his heroic performance at the event.
He completed the race in a total time of 3 hours, 30 minutes and 26 seconds and restricted the race favourites.
The cyclist was delighted after registering an important win of his career and thanked his colleagues for their endless support throughout the event.
"It was a bit of a tough stage today, in fact it’s been a bit of a rough week for me,” he noted.
“I started off in crashes on the first two days so I kind of lost my motivation because I came here to do something in the GC”.
“Luckily my Team Director coached me through the last few days as I was almost thinking of going home but luckily I didn’t as I won a stage today".
Sep Vanmarcke of Team Garmin-Sharp finished 15 seconds behind at the second position with Boy Van Poppel of Team UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling, Nathan Haas of Team Garmin-Sharp and Leigh Howard of Team Orica-GreedEdge securing the next three spots.
Jan Barta of Team NetApp wins the first mountain of the event while Bernard Sulzberger of Team Raleigh-GAC and Jonathan Tiernan-Locke of Team Endura Racing succeeded at the second and the third climbs of the event.
Leigh Howard of Team Orica-GreenEdge, Ivan Basso of Team Liquigas-Cannondale and Bartosz Huzarski of Team Netapp succeeded during the first, second and the third sprints of the event while Ivan Basso of Team Liquigas-Cannondale received the Rouleur Combativity
Award.
Leigh Howard is now leading the stage 5 classifications with a margin of 7 seconds over Boy Van Poppel of Team UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling.
Sep Vanmarcke of Team Garmin-Sharp is further ten seconds behind at the third spot while Sep Vanmarcke of Team Garmin-Sharp, Nathan Haas of Team Garmin-Sharp and Christian Knees of Team Sky Procycling holds the next four spots in the respective order.
Stage 4 overall leader, Mark Cavendish finished at the 61st position and is now dropped down to the 35th overall position after the stage 5 classifications.
