Marc Gasol on the double as Memphis Grizzlies beat Philadelphia 76ers 89 – 76 – NBA Recap
The Memphis Grizzlies put in an impressive shift to defeat the Philadelphia 76ers 89 – 76 at the FedExForum, in Memphis. Marc Gasol was an integral reason behind Grizzlies’ success Tuesday as the Spanish centre recorded a double-double.
"Marc was solid," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said. "He was around the basket. He was rebounding. He was passing the ball. He does what Marc does. He's a little tired. I told him to just go to the All-Star game and drink a couple of mojitos and enjoy
himself. "You know, don't play.
Gasol scored team high 15 point to go along with game high 14 rebounds as he led the Grizzlies to victory. Star forward Rudy g*y garnered 14 points, O.J. Mayo came off the bench for 13 and Marreese Speights had 12.
"We've played good enough basketball to beat a lot of teams and now we're not playing to the best of our abilities. Whether you want to blame it on injuries or any of that, we're not competing at the highest level, and it's showing on the floor." Louis Williams,
of the Sixers, said after the game.
Williams has been in good form for the 76ers this season, but he was off colour tonight, scoring just 8 points. It was left for Jrue Holiday to carry the scoring burden, with a game high 22 points. Other than him, Lavoy Allen was notable for his 14 in a
disappointing show by Philadelphia.
Memphis dominated the first quarter. After the score was 9 – 7 to the Grizzlies, the home side took over with a 21 – 2 run. The 76ers looked hapless and simply couldn’t get anything to fall, ending the period trailing 30 – 10.
The visitors did though hit back, in the second segment. The Philadelphia opened 9 – 2 as they looked to claw down the gap. They had an 11 – 1 run late in the frame that brought them to within 3 points, 43 – 40. The Grizzlies however were able to hold them
off and at half time were still ahead, 47 – 42.
After the interval both sides appeared much more cautious and the scoring slowed down. The 76ers had a 6 – 2 run early to which Memphis relied with a 6 – 0 spurt. Philadelphia remained in touch throughout but a 5 – 0 end to the period gave the Grizzlies
some breathing space, 69 – 60.
In the last 12 minutes, Philadelphia kept attacking without ever really causing much trouble to the home side. Memphis finally pulled off a 9 – 0 run that put them in the clear, at 89 – 74 with just over a minute left to play. 76ers had one more basket before
time ran out, handing Grizzlies a deserved win.
