Marc Gene believes Fernando Alonso is the best driver of 2012 – Formula 1 news
Ferrari test driver, Marc Gene has said that Fernando Alonso is surely the best driver of the 2012 Formula 1 season as he performed better than his main rival, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing.
The Italian team struggled throughout the pre-season testing programme this year and failed to develop a competent car for Alonso and his teammate, Felipe Massa.
Additionally, the technical director, Pat Fry ruled out the possibility of a podium finish in the season opener and expected to face difficulties in the first few races.
Even though, Massa couldn’t perform well during the start of the season, but the Spaniard performed inspiringly well even with the uncompetitive car and kept on scoring points with admirable consistency throughout the year.
The two-time world champion led the season for quite a long time but lost some crucial points in the championship fight after facing unfortunate retirements in a couple of races.
Although, he fought really hard until the end of the season, however, he lost the championship battle to Vettel in the end, just by 3 points.
It will important to note that there were many who think that Alonso deserved to win the championship more than the veteran German driver which include Lewis Hamilton too.
“I feel like Fernando has deserved it throughout the year,” Hamilton was quoted by ESPNF1. “His team haven't made one mistake. He hasn't always been the fastest but he has been up there. He has driven like the champion he is all year and I feel as though
he is a three-time world champion.”
Besides, Gene also said that the 25-year-old has won only because of his competitive car and expressed that his compatriot is the real champion of this year who has secured 13 podium finishes.
“The ease with which Vettel has won his titles is abnormal,” the former Minardi driver is quoted by EFE news agency.
“For me the best driver this year was undoubtedly Fernando, getting thirteen out of twenty podiums,” he added.
It will be very thrilling to see how the top two rivals compete in the next season and who wins the title.
