Marc Gicquel upsets Evgeny Donskoy in the round two – Geneva Open 2012 CH
French senior, Marc Gicquel, gave a three-set shocker to his Russian junior, Evgeny Donskoy, in the second round of the IPP Geneva Challenger 2012. He qualified for the next round after securing a 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-4 triumph at the
indoor hard courts of GreenSet GrandPrix, Switzerland.
At the start of the season, the Russian junior gave his rival penned down his three-set win against the Frenchman at his home ground in the quarter-finals of the Quimper Challenger. Gicquel avenged his former loss in nearly two
hours.
The world number 127th in the ATP World Tour Rankings, Donskoy commenced an average start in the opening set and failed to provide his rival with a tough challenge. The score line evened out twice, in the fourth and
sixth game respectively, as both contenders kept labouring hard to come on top. The French senior dissolved his opponent’s serve in the eighth game but the Russian fired back another hit to reverse the winning order after levelling the score line to 5-all
in the 10th game. He clinched the last two games and stole the first set with a 7-5 lead.
In the second set, both the players progressed at an equal pace and swayed away all the chances they received. They showed the aggression against one another to fuel their passion for winning and squared down each other’s serve
after every alternate game. None of the player broke serve and gave their competitor with a tough barrier. Eventually, Donskoy’s pace slowed down and the French professional nudged forward and stole the show with a 7-6(3) score after a tough tie-breaker round.
In the decider, the 22-year-old Russian preserved his serve, however, his game did not prove very energetic that time. Despite of his former loss, he struggled to level down the score line twice in the initial part but he melted
down in the seventh game. The French veteran cashed his only serve break opportunity and closed with a 6-4 triumph.
The 35-year-old French professional thundered nine aces and committed four double faults. He maintained 50 percent initial serve with 45 of 52 first and 29 of 53 second delivery points. The right-hander Russian contestant fired
12 aces with 58 percent first serve accuracy.
