Marc Lacomare and Alex Smith power into Round 3 at the Reef Hawaiian Pro
France’s Marc Lacomare and Hawaii’s Alex Smith made the Round 3 (Round of 64) cut at the Reef Hawaiian Pro, first of three events on the 30th anniversary Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, after emerging triumphant in their respective Round 2 (Round
of 96) heats that went down at the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii on Friday, November 16, 2012.
Brazil’s Jesse Mendes finished just below Lacomare in the seventh heat to make his way into the third round, whereas America’s Nathan Yeomans and Brazil’s Peterson Crisanto finished in third and fourth place respectively.
The eighth heat saw Guadeloupe’s Charles Martin accompany Smith in Round 3 after securing runner-up place, while Brazil’s Hizunome Bettero finished third and Australia’s Davey Cathels had to settle for bottom position.
The sea appeared to be in an adventurous mood on the latest mood on the latest day of the latest Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime event and therefore graced Alii Beach with waves that were proving to be pretty tough to tame.
Squaring-off against Mendes, Yeomans and Crisanto during the seventh heat, Lacomare knew he needed to come up with something special to have a solid chance of surviving the heat.
Converting the motivation into an impressive performance, the French surfer managed to find himself an 8.70 and 3.33 off his best-two waves to register a winning heat-total of 12.03 points.
Mendes finished in second place with a heat-total of 11.17 points after earning a 6.00 and 5.17 off his two business-waves. The effort was not good enough to earn him top spot, but it proved adequate to keep him alive in the contention for the coveted $250,000.
Yeomans and Crisanto were unable to get themselves into the next round after finishing with a heat-total of 8.20 and 3.63 points respectively.
Smith walked away with top honours from the eighth heat after getting the better of Martin, Bettero and Cathels.
The Hawaiian surfer displayed his exquisite surfing skills during the course of the battle and collected a 7.00 and 6.50 off his best-two waves to register a heat-total of 13.50 points.
Martin accompanied the Hawaiian surfer into the third round after getting hold of a 6.00 and 3.50 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 9.50 points.
Bettero finished in third place with a heat-total of 8.43 points, while Cathels had to settle for fourth place after a dismal heat-total of 2.84 points. Both the surfers were consequently prematurely eliminated from the competition.
