Marc Lacomare and Alex Smith secure Round 2 spot at Reef Hawaiian Pro
The opening round (Round of 128) of the Reef Hawaiian Pro, first of three stops on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, saw France’s Marc Lacomare and Hawaii’s Alex Smith claim victory in their respective heats that went down at the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii
on Thursday, November 15, 2012.
Lacomare took the win in the seventh heat of Round 1 to secure his place in Round 2 (Round of 96), while Australia’s Davey Cathels accompanied him after claiming second place. Australia’s Heath Joske and Hawaii’s Myles Padaca were unable to survive in the
event after rounding out the bottom-two positions.
The eighth heat saw Smith clinch the win, while Brazil’s Peterson Crisanto finished just below him in second place. Both the surfers consequently advanced to the next round. America’s Tim Reyes and Hawaii’s Joel Centurion finished in third and fourth place
respectively, which resulted in their elimination from the competition.
With $250,000 on the line, the 128 talented surfers from 15 countries had a solid justification for pushing hard on the opening day of the competition. The conditions on offer were not the best, but the determination to shine at the latest Association of
Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime event of the season was just too strong to let their spirits get deterred.
Pitted against Cathels, Joske and Padaca in the seventh heat, Lacomare sure had his work cut out. The French surfer, however, responded well to the challenge and managed to earn a 6.87 and 6.50 off his best-two waves to register a winning heat-total of 13.37
points.
Cathels finished in second place after getting to a heat-total of 11.50 points, which included a 6.00 and 5.50-point tide.
Joske and Padaca finished with a heat-total of 8.50 and 6.37 points respectively. The effort just was not good enough to keep them alive in the contention for the event title and slice of the massive prize purse.
The eighth heat saw Smith claim victory, though just barely, after finishing with a not-so-threatening two-wave total of 8.07 points, which included a 6.00 and 2.07-point ride.
Crisanto made the Round 2 cut as well after securing second place through a heat-total of 7.50 points, which comprised of a 4.33 and 3.17-point ride.
Reyes finished third with a heat-total of 7.10 points, while Centurion registered a two-wave total of 1.53 points. Both the surfers were consequently forced to make a premature exit from the competition.
