Marc Lacomare and Dusty Payne emerge triumphant in Round 2 at Vans World Cup of Surfing
France’s Marc Lacomare and Hawaii’s Dusty Payne were able to successfully make their way into the third round (Round of 64) at the Vans World Cup of Surfing, the second of three events on the 30th anniversary Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, which
continued the thrilling action at Sunset Beach in Oahu, Hawaii, on Friday, November 30, 2012.
Lacomare took the win in the 13th heat, while America’s Tanner Gudauskas finished in second place, consequently accompanying his French rival into the next round. Morocco’s Ramzi Boukhiam finished third, while Brazil’s Tomas Hermes was forced
to settle for fourth place. The bottom-two finish resulted in their elimination from the competition.
The 14th heat saw Payne, accompanied by Australia’s Garrett Parkes who finished in second place, advance to the next round. Hawaii’s Gavin Gillette and America’s Dane Gudauskas got eliminated from the event after rounding out the bottom-two positions.
With challenging, in fact deadly conditions gracing the main event site on the latest day of the competition, the surfers from all corners of the world found themselves at odds with nature. However, the appeal of the coveted prize purse and Association of
Surfing Professionals (ASP) ranking points were proving to be a strong motivation for the contenders, who managed to deliver breath-taking performances despite such tough surfing conditions.
The 13th heat saw Lacomare steal the show with what was nothing short of a phenomenal performance under the circumstances.
The French surfer locked his first business-wave to unleash a series of exquisite tricks, earning a 9.50 for the effort. Backing it up with a 6.83-point ride, Lacomare eventually concluded the heat on a heat-total of 16.33 points, which served to seal the
fate of the four-man battle in his favour.
Gudauskas made the Round 3 cut after securing second place through a heat-total of 13.10 points, which included a couple of scores in the six-point range.
Boukhiam finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.47 points, while Hermes had to settle for fourth place after getting no better than a heat-total of 8.34 points.
The 14th heat saw Payne get the better of Parkes, Gillette and Gudauskas after registering a two-wave total of 14.67 points, which included an impressive 8.50-point and 6.17-point ride.
Parkes scored a 6.53 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with a 5.33-point wave, thus registering a heat-total of 11.86 points. The score proved sufficient to take him through into the next round.
Gillette and Gudauskas, however, were unable to make the Round 3 cut after finishing with a heat-total of 10.84 and 8.10 points.
