Marc Leishman expects low scores at the AT&T National
Marc Leishman, the winner of last week’s Travelers Championship, is expecting the players to record low scores in the upcoming AT&T National at the Congressional Country Club, from June 28 to July 1, 2012.
According to him, the winning score of last year’s US Open will not be enough for a victory this year at Congressional because of the slight changes made in the layout of the course.
The course is a bit firmer compared to the past and the greens are fast too. On the other hand, the length of the course is still the same as it was for the major event in 2011. Overall, the course looks like it is set for a major event.
“It's a lot firmer. It's playing probably the same length that it did last year in the Open,” Leishman said. “I wouldn't say there are any adjustments. You've still got to hit the fairways, hit good shots into the greens. Maybe you'll have to shape a few
more shots into pins to hold greens”.
“It's set up probably more like a major, and obviously the weather had a lot to do with it last year,” he added.
“It's definitely going to be tougher. I don't think 20-under is going to be winning or 15-under or whatever won the U.S. Open last year. I don't think that's going to happen again”.
Despite finishing tied for the 51st position at Congressional last year, Leishman is confident to improve his track record on the course when he will tee off at Tiger Woods’ hosted event on Thursday.
This year, he failed to qualify for the tournament and had a three-week rest prior to appearing in the Travelers Championship.
The highlight of his performance includes an eight-under par 62 in the final round to move 19 positions up the leaderboard.
He is now listed among the favourites to win the AT&T National because of his recent record on the PGA Tour. He has two top-three finishes in the last four events that he played.
The only worrying aspect is the last year’s performance that he displayed during the US Open, which saw him go six-over par for the tournament.
