Marc Leishman records two eagles in the opening round at the HP Byron Nelson Championship – Golf News
Marc Leishman carded a five-under par 65 in the opening round of the HP Byron Nelson Championship at the TPC Four Seasons Resort in Irving, Texas, to share the second spot on Thursday, May 17, 2012.
Leishman parred the first six holes he played, followed by a couple of consecutive birdies on the seventh and eighth holes.
The only bogey of the round came on the ninth hole when his try for the par putt bruised the hole with an inch.
While playing on the back nine of the course, he did some phenomenal display of the game and earned two eagles.
“On 11 I was trying to drive it up towards that right bunker, pulled it a little bit, perfect, right in front of the green there about 10-foot off the edge, easy chip, down grain,” he told about the eagle putts.
“Like I said, it was an easy chip and held that. Another one on 16, I think about 245, hit a 2-iron to about 8 feet, easy put, straight up, rolled that in and it was a good day”.
According to him, he drove the ball well on Thursday. Most of the time, the course witnessed him hit the fairways that helped him record a good score in the end.
“I think I only missed two or three fairways for the day,” he said. “Haven't been hitting a lot of fairways this year so far, so it's been -- it's an easy game from the fairway, I'll say that!”
Golf commentators believe that Leishman was mainly focusing on playing his natural game and he did not really try to put any extra effort on the course.
As a result, he avoided making mistakes that players generally do while trying to record low scores.
He still thinks that he should have done better, especially when he had two eagles on his scorecard.
According to him, he could have scored at least a couple of birdies, which would have taken him to the top of the leaderboard.
He is currently one stroke behind the leader, Ryan Palmer, who recorded a bogey-free six-under par 64 opening round score.
