The Eredivisie champions have given the former Arsenal attacker the responsibility of the club’s transfer dealings, scouting duties and youth academy.
Reports from Amsterdam Arena confirm that Ajax Amsterdam have appointed the former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 winger, Marc Overmars, as their new sporting director.
The 39-year-old will commence his new duties with immediate effect, which includes the Amsterdammers’ transfer dealings, youth academy and scouting duties.
The former Dutch international donned the jerseys of Go Ahead Eagles, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Netherlands-c753 in 86 matches, before hanging up his boots in
2009.
Overmars was extremely delighted to be a part of the club where he enjoyed huge success, winning three Eredivisie titles and lifting the UEFA Champions League title once.
“This position really appeals to me. I was a real team player during my playing career. In my new role, I am again with a group of people where I have to do the teamwork. I know many staff members at Ajax that will eventually help
me to work more efficiently”, the former Arsenal star was quoted as saying to the club’s official website.
The Amsterdammers head coach, Frank de Boer, was also pleased with the arrival of the former Barcelona winger, and insisted that the club management was missing a person like him.
“I welcome this move open heartedly. I think a person of his calibre was missing from the Ajax’s management. His inclusion in the backroom will certainly benefit the club, as he is extremely innovative and has a nose for talent.
A real football animal in my opinion”, De Boer said while talking to the Dutch media.
The Dutch trainer, who took over the managerial hot seat at Amsterdam Arena in December 2010 from Martin Jol, has led Ajax to two back-to-back Eredivisie titles.
The 42-year-old tactician would be hoping that the arrival of Overmars will help the Amsterdammers in luring some quality players to Amsterdam Arena in order to enhance his side’s chances of defending the title, as well as competing
successfully in Champions League.
