Marc Sergeant supports World Series Cycling
Team Lotto-Belisol General Manager, Marc Sergeant has stated the Cycling World Series is actually the sport’s future, while talking to media his team’s 2013 launch.
“Maybe some organisers are having huge problems due to the economical problems,” Sergeant told Cyclingnews at the launch of Lotto's 2013 team in Hasselt.
“Maybe it is the solution, but I think we all have to think in the same direction, because it is not easy to miss out some of the monuments and say we would rather go to Asia because it is important for the money”.
Jonathan Price, Gifted Group proposed a new series of 10 new 4-day cycling races and six one-day races to be introduced in the sport.
The idea faced a lot of criticism and negative response from the fans but Sergeant is convinced that the new races are really the future of the sport.
He noted that the economical problems have definitely influenced the sport but all the cyclists must think in the same direction and should not refute some of the monuments of cycling to ride elsewhere, because it pays more for instance in China.
“You have fans in Europe, Australia and the US, not in the Middle East and not in Asia yet. You have to do more work to be sure before you risk all of the historical things over here,” he told Cyclingnews during Team Lotto’s 2013 launch.
A total number of eight teams have signed for World Series Cycling including Team Omega Pharma-Quickstep owned by Zdenek Bakala, who is leading the event.
However, Team Lotto itself has not yet officially signed up with the WSC however, Sergeant believe that the team is also Belgian so it will definitely be interested in the preposition.
Team Lotto Belisol recently received its World Tour license after UCI approved its request to ride at the top level of the sport.
The team for the new season is almost the same as 2012 with an exception of Gianni Meersman who has left the team after 2012 using the UCI clause to break his contract.
Team has replaced Meersman with Dirk Bellemakers and Tim Wellens and is all set to welcome the 2013 at the Santos Tour Down Under with Andre Greipel as its team manager.
