Marc Warren loses in playoffs at the BMW PGA Championship – Golf news
Marc Warren missed out on a chance of recording the third European Tour victory of his career, after he lost to Matteo Manassero in the sudden death playoffs of the BMW PGA Championship, on Sunday, May 26, 2013.
The tournament was being staged at the Wentworth Club, featuring some of the top-notch players on the European Tour.
Warren started his final-round campaign two shots off the lead and was sharing the third spot on the leaderboard. He then got off to a mixed start, as he eagled the fourth hole, sandwiched between the bogeys
on the third and the fifth hole.
After recording par putts on the last four holes on the front nine, he birdied each of the first four holes on the back nine of the course, which allowed him to surge to the top of the leaderboard.
The 15th hole witnessed him conceding another bogey of the day, which proved costly in the end, as he had to enter into the playoffs with Simon Khan and Manassero.
On the first extra hole, Warren’s tee shot went into the trees, which did not allow him to match birdies recorded by both of his opponents.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he expressed his disappointment in making another near miss in a European Tour event – he recorded similar finishes last season at the Open de España and the Aberdeen
Asset Management Scottish Open.
"The other two occasions I felt as if I probably gave those away. This time, I didn't do that," said Warren. "On 18 I had hit three or four iron all week and we thought in the play-off the guys are going to go
for it so I had to go for it, and unfortunately the tee shot was either five yards too far short or too far right and that was the end of that.”
"I've done absolutely nothing wrong this week, and it's all positives and looking forward to my next event,” he added.
Manassero, in the meantime, became the youngest winner of the tournament, after he recorded a birdie putt against Khan’s bogey on the fourth extra hole to take the title home.
