Marc Zwiebler overwhelms Tien Chen Chou in opening round of the Singapore Open Super Series
Germany’s Marc Zwiebler ousted Chinese Taipei’s Tien Chen Chou in the Men’s Singles opening round of the 2011 Singapore Open Super Series, held at Singapore City, on Wednesday, June 15.
The German, who is currently placed at the Number 15 spot in the Men’s Singles world rankings, had to dig deep into his reserves to produce some winning strokes against the talented Tien Chen, to grab the rubber-set battle in 55 minutes.
In the opening game of this first round contest, Zwiebler began his campaign in a relaxed manner and his slow speed helped his opponent to build a good gap of points. In the first-half, Tien Chen was the leader of the game as he played flawless badminton
in front of the packed stadium.
The German tried to catch up the pace of the game, but he failed as his challenger was playing an impressive game with more accuracy and precision. Zwiebler played an unconventional game and lost the opening set by a big difference of 21-14, in 16 minutes.
However, in the following game, the German made a tremendous comeback by increasing his speed and established a good lead in the first part of the set. After the one-minute break, he continued his grip over the game by dictating the pace of the bird and
was successful in levelling the match by winning the second set with a 21-18 margin, in 20 minutes.
In the deciding set, both shuttlers elevated their level of play and put up a superb show. Nobody could mark a clear domination in the entire set, as the speed and the accuracy of both shuttlers was working at the same level. The score moved forward with
the same pace which increased the interest of the crowd in this thrilling encounter.
At the concluding part of the third set, the German started to dominate his rival at the net, which helped him in finishing up the game by a 21-19 score, in 19 minutes. The 55-minute contest ended with a 14-21, 21-18 and 21-19 margin.
